2017 Read-A-Thon
How is your school going this year? Do you need some inspiration to help the kids finish their lessons? Maybe we can help.
We are announcing our 2017 Read-A-Thon to our members first. Each grade level will have a first and second prize winner. We will have a $25 gift card for first prize and a $15 gift card for the second prize.
Then we will have a Grand Prize of a 4 Day weekend in Branson in a 2 bedroom condo with a family ticket to Silver Dollar City Homeschool Days. You will have to provide your own transportation.
Just click here and sign up your children under their reading grade level, one sign up for each child.
Each child will get 10 points for every hour read between April 1 and April 30, 2017.
They will also get a point for every dollar donated. The program has an email you can send to friends and family to donate to help your child win a prize.
We will add the reading points and the donation points to find out winners in each grade level. So a child can get 10 points for reading, and have 10 people donate $10 for each hour read, equaling 110 points for each hour read. We will have a $25 gift card for first prize and a $15 gift card for the second prize. Winners will be announced on May 15th.
Use this ReadingLog to keep track of your child’s reading.
What can they read? They can count time reading their whole books, their textbooks, their comic books, their computer lessons, their kindle book, or the newspaper. K-3rd grades can count hours parents read to them.
We hope this will help you encourage your children in reading.

Any idea when final results will be available??
You will be getting an email today.
We appreciate the questions. This is our first Read-A-Thon. I know most of you are used to homeschool organizations that are very professional with staff, but we are an all voluntary organization. So this gives you a taste homeschooling in the frontier times, when it was all home made. 🙂
Where do we send the reading logs when the Read-a-Thon is over?
They can be mailed or scanned and emailed.
How do we submit reading logs?
At this time, download and print the reading log in the post. We are working with the website for an online reading log.
We just sent an email to all participants. We now have an online form, the link was in the email. If you did not get the email, please check your spam folder, or contact us.
We still suggest that you keep the daily log noted in our original post and then add the total at to the form at the end.
Some part of this is incorrect.
“Each child will get 10 points for every hour read between April 1 and April 30, 2017.
They will also get a point for every dollar donated.
We will add the reading points and the donation points to find out winners in each grade level. So a child can get 10 points for reading, and have 10 people donate $1 for each hour read, equaling 110 points for each hour read.”
If a child gets 10 points for 1 hour read & 1 point for each dollar per hour donated, with 10 people at $1 per hour, that’s only 20 points (10 points for reading + 10 points for dollars donated)per hour read not 110.
Yes, our math was off. Our Apologies. It was supposed to say 10 people donate $10 per hour.
How do I sign in to record the daily reading? Do we have to be members to participate in the read-a-thon?
You do not have to be members to participate. We did give our members notification before we told the general public. We are working on an interface to record daily reading, until then, please use the reading log linked in the blog post.

Just a thought – It would be nice if the points were just granted for reading. As it is, only kids with family and friends with means have a chance to win. Otherwise, I love this idea.
I can understand why you might think that. So far, since this is our first year doing this, we have a limited amount of participants, which means a better chance to win. I did see a tweet from a mom asking folks to “sponsor” her child’s reading for this Read-A-Thon. Very inventive, I thought.
Where do the students log their reading hours online? (They have the hard copy for personal use.) How do you know who read the most hours?
If we cannot get the website to set up a online reading log, we will have people mail or scan and email their logs to us. This will, however, cause a delay in announcing the winners. We would have to push back the announcement for 2 weeks to give everyone a chance to send their logs to us.
